Adam’s Bridge Marine Park is a national park in the North West of Sri Lanka which straddles the legendary Adam’s Bridge. This was a recent addition to the national parks of Sri Lanka and was only initiated in 2015. Adam’s Bridge Marine Park is a fantastic opportunity to take in some wildlife tourism on your trip to the northern parts of Sri Lanka. Often not on the standard tourism map, the north can offer unexpected joy and fulfillment to the discerning traveler in Sri Lanka looking to go away from the beaten track!
The Adam’s Bridge Marine Park sits smack in the middle of several routes taken by migratory birds. The sand dunes of Adam’s Bridge are sometimes crowded with birds who come there because of its particular potency as a prime breeding grounds! Untold quantities of fish and sea grasses thrive in the shallow waters of Adam’s Bridge, making this an invaluable site for the sustenance of marine life in this area of Sri Lanka.
The Adam’s Bridge MArina Park is represented by no more than a chain of small shoals and islands. It has a length of 48 kilometres and connects India and Sri Lanka. This bridge goes back to the earliest legends and myths of Sri Lanka. According to the Indian epic poem ‘The Ramayana’, the bridge was built by the orders of the Emperor Rama who used it to invade Sri Lanka in order to rescue his wife from the clutches of Ravana, the Sri Lankan ruler, who had kidnapped her away in revenge and for a dirty weekend. It’s a long story and we are sure you will find your guide at the marine park will have a lot to say about it!
Some areas of the bridge are blocked off by the Sri Lankan Navy and cannot be accessed, so make sure you check on the current security situation in the area before traveling. Your resort or guest house manager should easily be able to help you figure that out. This area of Sri Lanka has some amazing hotels and cosy guest houses for your living pleasure. We would recommended Hyatt Place Rameshwaram and North Gate by Jetwing.
